Choices of the Heart (An Enriching Women's Bible Study Series)
Published in Paperback by David C. Cook Publishing Company (September, 2002)
Authors: Kathy Collard Miller and Chariot Victor Publishing
Average review score:

Great study guide!!
I really have enjoyed doing this study guide on the women of the Bible. Even if you have done one on the women of the Bible before I believe you will still enjoy this one. It looks at the story of the different women from a different angle than some I have done in the past. My Sunday school class and I are currently doing this Bible study and I have heard nothing but compliments on how much they all like this study guide. It has some women that we do not ususally hear too much about such as Job's wife, the Syrophoncien woman, Gomer, Zezebel, Leah and Lydia. And of course some of the more well known such as Mary Jesus' mother, Mary and Martha, and Deborah. The study guide helps readers to study God's word and help apply to daily situations and how we can learn from these ladies of old even today.

The Christian and Anxiety
Published in Paperback by Ignatius Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Dennis D. Martin, Michael J. Miller, and Yves Tourenne
Average review score:

What Theology Should Be
Many accuse theology of being meaningless bickering over what we cannot verify. Von Balthasar happily topples those prejudices with this book, which is not only a profound look at the human condition and Scripture, but is also a strong challenge to the reader. The Christian and Anxiety starts with a chapter on what anxiety means in Scripture. This first Chapter alone would merit a purchase, as von Balthasar pulls together many threads from the Wisdom literature of the OT (e.g., Proverbs, Wisdom, Sirach, etc.) to give us a Scriptural review of anxiety. I found this very fruitful, and has caused me to go back to a couple books of the Bible for a new look. Von Balthasar then goes on in the next two chapters to reflect on the theological and philosophical underpinning of anxiety. This becomes tough, involved reading, and I'll be musing over this part of the book for some time, but you do come away with a new understanding about anxiety, which seems to be a very representative emotion for the modern West. Some books are difficult because the writing is poor, or the thoughts are disconnected, and some books are difficult because the author enters into a deep subject and does justice to it. The Christian and Anxiety fits in with the latter, and I highly recommend it as a worthy investment.

Christmas by the Hearth

Great book for family reading at Christmas
I have used this book for two years during Advent to read aloud to my family as we finish dinner. My 12 year-old at first thought it was silly, but she is always captivated by the stories. I like the blend of fiction, nonfiction, sentimental, and compelling selections. We have learned about Christmas for some Civil War soldiers, read some old classics such as The Gift of the Magi, and discovered some new authors we like. I highly recommend the book as a way to combat the secular focus of Christmas, without being preachy.

Christs: Meditations on Archetypal Images in Christian Theology
Published in Hardcover by Seabury Pr (March, 1981)
Author: David Leroy Miller
Average review score:

For Christians with Polytheistic Souls !!
It is a pity that this quartet of David Miller's books: The New Polytheism, Christs, Three Faces of God and Hells and Holy Ghosts are out of print. They are simply brilliant examples of Archetypal Psychology's eye (that is, a polytheistic, mythopoeic, psyche-logical eye) turned on the beliefs of a montheistic faith. Not possible you think ? It is absolutely necessary I think, necessary to turn the two Doctors of the Soul (Jung and Hillman's) eyes on a faith whose soul has been long missing. For those Christians who have experienced the polytheism of their own soul and are seeking to integrate this experience into their faith these books are tailor made. I don't know of any other books that have attempted to do what David Miller has done. His accessible style in explaining complex notions is at least equal to that of Thomas Moore (of Care of the Soul fame).

Citadel of Light (Dramatic Supplement)
Published in Hardcover by Wizards of the Coast (July, 1998)
Authors: Steve Miller, Miranda Horner, TSR Inc, and Stan!
Average review score:

One of the best setting supplements for Dragonlance!
This boxed set represents the pinnacle of what the 5th Age should be about, and is a must for every narrator/DM that wants to adventure in the 5th Age. The Citadel of Light (the mystical organization Goldmoon created when she discovered the magic of the Heart in the 5th Age) is detailed in full, with enough adventure hooks and story ideas to keep even the most active campaign busy. More importantly, this supplement is written in an interesting way that allows readers to absorb it quickly without falling asleep from boredom. I highly recommend this product for both SAGA and Dungeons and Dragons.

Note: Many of the characters in CoL are also used in Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's War of Souls trilogy, the first book of which is Dragons of a Fallen Sun.

City Spaces: Photographs of Chicago Alleys (Center Books on Chicago and Environs)

a tease!
I met Bob in the spring of 1986 when I took his Architectural Photography course at Columbia College Chicago. It would be wrong to define Bob as an Architectural Photographer. He goes beyond the definition. The only thing "architectural" in his work are the buildings themselves. This guy is a documentarist and a good one! I thank him for the hard time he gave me when I took his course because he wanted us to do more than "just" taking pictures of buildings. It is quite difficult as you can imagine! The subject matter isn't flexible ...I guess I sometimes achieved that. An image such as "Near North Side neighborhood, Chicago, 1973" on page 2 isn't an architectural image. It is a document and a good one. I know for a fact that Bob spent many days studying the Art Sinsabaugh collection at the print study room of the Art Institute of Chicago. He actually took us there once. At the same time I sense some sadness and also shyness in these images. But they are beautiful and I can respond to them. Bob is a sensitive man and his course was more like a seminar where he opened himself to us as an image-maker and thinker.

There are a number of images in this book, which would make the day of a gestalt analyst: plates 13, 22, 31 (gorgeous isn't it?), 68, 69, and 70. The strange thing about these images is that images of alleys presuppose that there is more to them than what we are shown - "What is beyond that?". After all an alley is only the side, or back, of a building or of two or three buildings. Plates 18, 21, 24, 28, 34, 36, 48, 51, 52, 54, 65 have tremendous tension in them. I mean to say that the tension is created by the subject matter itself, and by the composition used. It is somehow difficult to close them. They go on and on. Great photography!

For those of us who think in terms of photographic images in the "great American tradition" of the view camera, this book is a breadth of fresh air. In his other books Bob achieves the greatness of an Ansel Adams when he produces images of urban landscapes. In this book he teases you! Thanks for the books and the 1986 course! I continue on learning a great deal from you and I sincerely hope that your current students do to!

The Civil War Tales of Ambrose Bierce
Published in Audio Cassette by Penton Overseas, Inc. (01 January, 1998)
Author: Timothy Patrick Miller
Average review score:

Well Read Civil War Stories of Ambrose Bierce
This book on tape is really moving. The stories come across very powerfully and bring home the emotional impact of the Civil War from the point of view of the soldiers and the civilians who were affected by the battles. Most memorable is the story of the child who gets lost behind the battle lines close to his farm. Listening to these stories makes them come alive more powerfully than simply reading the written words could possibly do. I highly recommend this book on tape.

Claiming His Own
Two wonderful stories...realistic and somewhat thought provoking.I felt while reading this that the sceanarios are quite believable...the romances are also most realistic...While reading I felt for the main characters and thought about how I would react...It gave me a look into what life is about in the 21st century...I enjoyed this immensely.
